International credit cards

Friday,10th August 2007

A global credit card that can be used to pay for products and services worldwide makes traveling abroad a pleasure. There is no need to carry traveler's cheques or foreign currency anymore if you have an international credit card.

Banks are now allowed to issue a single credit card that can be used to pay for products and services all over the world (over 200 countries at present) and to settle the accounts in Indian rupees. This is a vast improvement over the previous system, which allowed a few select cardholders to repay the outstanding amount in dollars anywhere in the world. The plain vanilla regular credit cards were valid additionally only in Nepal and Bhutan

The use of global cards is governed by RBI guidelines on foreign exchange permitted for official and personal trips. These rules remain the same irrespective of whether you choose to pay by traveler's cheques, cash or the new global credit cards.
