Protests against political interference in Irla slum destruction

Residents of Juhu-Vile Parle area marched in protest against the government for its alleged apathy towards their problems of flooding in their area which has become acute. The residents carried placards and maintained that the congress politic is interfering in the process of shifting slums from the Irla nullah and resettling the people there. The nullah was considered to one of the major reasons for caused flooding in the area on June 30, 2007. The morcha was organised by several civic organisations like the JVPD Residents Association, the JVPD Tenants Association, Juhu Citizens Welfare Group and was supported by Khar Residents Association, H West Ward Civic Trust and NGOs like Hum Log and Mumbai Together and students of Jamnabai Narsee School. Shabana Azmi, actor and activist, addressed the morcha saying that she had held talks with MP Priya Dutt who had agreed to plan the slum resettlement through SRA scheme.
