Central government has decided to set up an Indian Institute of Information Technology (IIIT) centre in Chennai, Tamil Nadu for design and manufacturing, taking the state's request into consideration.

Other premier institutes will also be established in the state as a part of the skills development initiative. One initiative will be the establishment of an ICT academy and a finishing school.

The state government had also requested the Centre to establish three new premier educational institutes in the state an Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) in Madurai, an Indian Institute of Management (IIM) in Coimbatore and an Indian Institute of Science, Education and Research (IISER) at Trichy.
