Karnataka Govt to approve 20 new ITIs

The Karnataka government plans to approve 20 new Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs) in the state during 2008. 46 new colleges came up in the state in 2007.

Currently, there are 148 government ITIs and 740 in the private sector in Karnataka. The ITIs will be get adequate backing by the government to function as autonomous institutions with the capability of generating their own funds.

The government is working with the International Labour Organisation (ILO) to prepare a policy framework.

According to media reports, the government of India is planning to set up at least 1,500 Industrial Training Institutes in 1,500 blocks in the country in the next five years. In addition to this, the government is planning to set up 15,000 skill development centres at an investment of Rs 22,000 crore in the next five years.
