VW to launch small car in 2010, named 'Up!'

Wednesday,12th September 2007

Europe’s largest car maker, Volkswagen has unveiled its new small car concept – Up! Posed to come to India in 2010, this will be the fourth car to be assembled by Volkswagen in India.

The new small car was launched at the 62nd Frankfurt Motor Show. The company had launched Passat, its first locally-assembled car in India, a few days ago. The next in line are premium C-segment Jetta and a premium small car.

The price-sensitive Indian is likely to get Up! about 40 per cent cheaper compared to the European buyers. The car, according to the company, will cost about 6,000 euros (Rs 3, 30,000) for Indian customers while it would be sold for 10,000 euros (Rs 5,50,000) in Europe.

The rear-engined, three-door machine, with satellite navigation and an onboard computer, is still at the concept stage. That means the company is yet to take a final call on manufacturing it. The company hopes to launch it in two-cylinder petrol and three-cylinder diesel engines, with the displacement ranging from 500cc to 1000cc.
