Bajaj Auto
unveiled its small car prototype claiming that it will be twice as economical
to run as the most fuel-efficient small car in the market.
Unveiling
the car, Bajaj Auto Managing Director Rajiv Bajaj said it will be priced
competitively but will not sell on the basis of price, twice the fuel
efficiency being more effective than offering discount price.
He said
that the car is two to four years in making it to consumers and will come in
both diesel and petrol versions. It will be fitted with a "unique" two-cylinder
engine as well as gear system.
The
company is in talks with French car maker Renault and Nissan to develop the car
for mass production.
The car
will be manufactured at Chakan, near Pune. The plant, which is being built with
an initial capacity of 250,000 units, will also produce the light trucks, which
Bajaj expects to launch in 2009.
