Date : Apr 9, 2007 Question I stay with my sibling in his own quarter.He is an government employee and stays in government provided quarter.I pay him Rs.7, 000 every month for expenses.Can I claim tax benifit on my HRA for this ? Answer HRA can be claimed only if you pay the rent for the house you live in. Since you do not pay the rent to your brother (only expenses), you will not be able to get any exemption for HRA. If you can get a receipt from your brother saying that the amount paid by you to him, is towards the rent. However, your brother may find it difficult to give such a receipt as he stays in a government accommodation. |
