Date : Mar 30, 2007 Question I have taken an education loan from a local bank at a rate of interest of 9% BPLR (Bank Prime Lending Rate). The loan amount is Rs.1.9 lakh, for 36 months. I borrowed the loan on June 2002. I completed my college in June 2004. I didn't get a job till July 2005. I had a repayment holiday for 1 year. After July 2005, I had paid an amount of Rs.6, 000. Due to my family circumstances, I have not been able to make EMI payments since the past 4 months. I would like to know the amount that may have accumulated by now. If I make payments towards a part of the loan, will this move be in my favour? Answer To know how much of loan will have accumulated by now, kindly contact your bank. It is advisable to pay the EMI's because defaults are reported to the credit bureau. Your bank will also be in a position to offer you settlement options (partial or full). If you do not make payments towards the loan, this will be reported to the credit bureau. This will prevent you from getting another loan or better rates in future. If you delay the payments, you will also incur penalty and keeping the decision pending will mean extra costs. |
