| I had defaulted in my credit card payment 6 years back due to financial problems. I made a settlement with the collection agent (due was Rs. 30, 000 and I had paid Rs. 12,000 as full and final settlement). I did not receive the notice for the back regarding the final settlement. I left city /country after that. I understand that my name is in the defaulters list. Is there any way I can sort this problem now? Can I go back to the bank and declare? What is the right solution? | |

| Even if you had a settlement, in the records of the bank and credit bureau, you are a defaulter. You will find it difficult to get fresh loans. Elsewhere in the world, in similar situation, it might have been possible to get a loan from lenders who specialise in lending to people who have just come out of a bad credit situation. In India, such a class of lenders has not yet emerged. If you are seeking fresh credit, try to improve your credit history by taking secured loans (such as a credit card against fixed deposit, loan against financial/real estate securities, jewellery). Once your credit history is rebuilt, you may be eligible for regular credit, albeit at a higher cost. | |
